We Celebrate YOG 2010

 

As YOG 2010 is drawing to a closer date, our school had gone all out to promote Living Olympism as a mean to show support for the first ever Youth Olympic Games.


 We have a banner that showed the Olympic mottos and values while the other 2 depicts CCHY support in YOG and the welcoming of our twinning country, Libya Arab Jamahiriya. These banners were hung around the sports hall before the start of school this year. The eye catching colours and pictures not only heighten the YOG spirit in CCHY, but have also serve as reminders to students, during PE lessons or their CCAs, to always live by the Olympic values: Respect, Friendship and Excellence.


We promoted the different Olympic values every month through Assembly presentations for the whole school and Tuesday morning activities for the different houses.


The first and second assembly presentations were presented in Conversation style and the final presentation was in a form of News Broadcast which included the presentation of CCHY's twinning country. The reason why we used different style of presentations was actually a means to the students and to ensure that we had sent the message across to them.


We organized Tuesday Morning activities for the different houses so that we can promote the Olympic values of Friendship, Respect and Excellence. We promoted the value of 'Friendship' in January, ‘Respect' in ‘February' and ‘Excellence' in March and April.


In March, We had a cultural showcase of countries such as USA, Japan and Greece. Through this cultural showcase, we wanted to promote the value of ‘Friendship and Multiculturalism'.


A few weeks before the sports day, we held a banner making competition whereby each house adopted an Olympic value of Respect, Friendship and Excellence and also our school value of ‘Courage'.

In May, as a post exam activity, the Sports Ambassadors of CCHY helped to organize a Sports Carnival with the aim of instilling bonding through sports among our fellow schoolmates. There were two categories of sports. One of it is the inter-house sports and another, the sports related inter-class games. In support of YOG 2010, the sports ambassadors included the sports of ‘Handball' which require much teamwork and skills.

The first semester has indeed been a fun filled one with various activities in our school to promote YOG 2010.

Interaction with guest from Libya on 7 July 2009

On 7 June 2009, Chung Cheng was honoured to receive a guest from Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, the twinning country our school adopted as we move towards Youth Olympic Games 2010. His name is Mohammed Benhmuda, age 15. The languages that he speaks are mainly: French, Arab & English and he came to Singapore for the Young Reporters Training Camp (YRTC) 2009. The main objective of this meeting was for cross cultural interaction purposes.

 When he first arrived, we had breakfast in the canteen and a tour around our school, starting from our heritage room. We shared our school's history and culture with him as we tour around the school. After that we invited him into one of our classrooms to experience the type of teachings that we undergo; regardless of the subjects that were being taught, he was very attentive and excited.

 After the experience in the classroom, we had some interaction time in the school's library. We learnt that Libya has a hot and dry climate and most of the citizens stay in air conditioned houses everyday. The main revenue come from export of oil and most of the citizens there are rich and wealthy. After some interaction, we showed him some videos our school mates had made to educate the school's population on YOG. Afterwards, Benhmuda played some ball games with some secondary 3 boys. This was another period where we learnt more about Libyans' culture. Most Libyans are muslims and the most popular sport is soccer. He commented that we should be grateful that there are many types of greenery in Singapore. Trees are only seen in wealthy homes in Libya, since water is scare and only few trees can grow. Well, these also serve to remind us not to take the environment lightly.
